Weekly Prep Thread 16 Mar - 22 Mar

Not a bad week. Managed to get 15 tomato, 9 jalapeno, 9 cucumber, 9 cabbage, and 3 strawberry plants planted. Oh, and 3 bell peppers. Not too bad considering we're leasing here and don't own the land. Now, when I retire back to our place in TX in May or June '09, I'll have a half-acre set aside for the garden.

Last season I only planted two tomatoes and the dang things grew to 11.5 feet tall! I had to stake them with 2x4x12's that I ripped to 2x2.

Anyhoo... How's it going with the rest of the Gimmers?

Packed 200 lbs. of wheat berries in mylar bags and buckets.
5 large cans of a cheap/generic type coffee at Krogers....

REMEMBER back in the early 80s the generic BLACK and WHITE labels for the basic stuff in your local grocery store? Well it's back here only with some color on the labels..toilet paper, paper towels, coffee, etc.

Maybe next year the whole damn store will be filled with this stuff.

Good luck folks

- bought a portable stove with 48 canisters of fuel(will need more)

- also finally bought a Sun Oven since the price has come down about 20%.

- purchased extra pots, pans and silverware.

next on my list are back-up gel batteries with solar chargers, as well an alternative charger and an inverter.

Starting the inspection/repacking process of 500lbs wheat berries, 500lbs rice, 500lbs barley, 500lbs corn, 500lbs soybean.

Unfortunately, looks like preparing for my wife and four children is not enough. I will likely be dealing with at least 30 other local family members. :banghead:

Looking to purchase some more PMs this week. Also hoping for an interview for a job that pays substantially better than my current one.

Re: Weekly Prep Thread 16 Mar - 22 Mar

I'll admit that I'm a bit behind on my preps. I have lots of ammo and a pretty minimal amount of PMs and about 2 weeks of food. This week I started looking at my tools. I think my tools are going to be as important if not more so than anything I could store. I'm moving away from power tools and into traditional hand tools and I've actually got a pretty good selection so far. I did make one impulse buy last week. I was at the hardware store for matches and nails and as I was standing in line a rack of 24 inch crowbars were calling out to me. Since I only have small flat bars at home I picked one up. I also bought the bolt-cutters that were hanging next to it. Hardware store guy looked at me funny and then gave me a wink. Wonder what that meant.

Went to the store yesterday, got a dozen eggs a loaf of bread and a 1/2 gallon of milk. Still had plenty of food left from last week so I should be all set for this week.
Saturday I also ordered a pizza. I cant see any reason to stock up longer than a week or so. If all else fails theres always the local chinese place and they deliver. So does dominoes although I dont really care for their pizza.

Oh I also still have a 30 day supply of oatmeal and at least a 2 month supply of toilet paper just in case the S does hit the fan. gotta have something to clean it with.

I bought it in a group purchase a couple of years back. I will take a look at the label and see if I can get a harvester/packager for you.

Are you having a hard time finding it now?

malted barley for making beer (very important prep, IMO) is probably readily available in 50 or 55 pound sacks at your local homebrew store. It is at mine.

I picked up seven boxes of grits today. Of course, since I eat grits every day for breakfast, that is only about a 14 week supply. I need to buy 150 lb of whole flint corn before I'll feel good about my grits supply.

Picked up 15 more pounds of White Sage Honey, some Lavlin dry yeast, a few nutrient packets, 5 gallons of water and some yeast activator. Of course this will be turned into a sweet Mead and completely consumed by the end of summer, but I figure preps should include multiple timeframes and my summer was starting to look a little dry.:D

I just pulled the trigger on a Royal Berkey with an extra set of Black Berkey filters (so I'll have four total filters), and a Country Living Grain Mill and a larger auger for corn and beans.

I plan to get another set or two of Black Berkey filters down the road if TS doesn't HTF right away. But for now, I need to increase my food stock.

I bought two cases of motor oil at Kragen auto. 1 case of Valvoline, and 1 case of Chevron. After I get the mail in rebate check, the Chevron will have cost me .49 cents per quart, and the Valvoline .99 cents per. The rebate thing is a hassle, but they are all combined together, and you get one check for everything. Also did the same thing with Autolite platinum plugs. .99 cents each after rebate.

wife is into food preps now, she says it makes sense because we buy what we eat anyway and will save money given current inflation even if no SHTF. She's out right now buying a ton of beans. Have onions started fom seed in january doing well in flats on window, start other stuff next new moon.
